Carrier's WeatherShield Protection

Coastal Living is “A Day at the Beach” with Carrier’s WeatherShield™ Protection

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, April 25, 2012 – Carrier, the world’s leader in high technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, launches two new units with WeatherShield™ protection to provide a superior rust and corrosion defense against coastal elements that can fade finishes, corrode metals and more. The new Infinity® series two-stage heat pump and air conditioner with WeatherShield™ protection stand up to the harsher elements of the seacoast longer than standard heat pumps and air conditioners, making coastal living a “day at the beach.” Carrier is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“For those living in coastal regions in the U.S., there is a need for heating and cooling products that can provide lasting comfort and durability within that harsh climate,” said Matt Nuijens, Carrier brand manager. “Carrier is leading the way with the Infinity 16 heat pump and the Infinity 17 air conditioner with WeatherShield protection that are built to endure the sea air longer than other units. We want our coastal customers spending a great day enjoying the beach, rather than worrying about the reliability of their heat pump or air conditioner.”
Carrier WeatherShield protection is designed to defend against seacoast corrosion in three critical ways:
  1. THE CARRIER WEATHERARMOR ULTRA™ PROTECTION SYSTEM: Included as part of the Infinity series heat pumps or air conditioners, the WeatherArmor Ultra system includes a galvanized steel cabinet, louvered coil guard and baked-on powder paint for advanced protection against rust, corrosion and physical damage due to hail, heavy winds and more. The WeatherArmor™ system offers similar benefits for our Comfort series heat pumps and air conditioners, incorporating a heavy-duty wire coil guard instead of a louvered coil guard.
  2. DUAL-PAINT COVERAGE: Painting both sides of the exposed metal surfaces significantly reduces entry points for corrosive elements.
  3. ARMORPLATE™ COATED COILS: The Carrier ArmorPlate coated coil features coastal fins with a specially formulated epoxy coating that prevents destructive corrosion. In addition, the slits have been removed from the aluminum fins of the heat pumps and air conditioners, which can trap sand and other contaminants that can encourage corrosion.
“Carrier prides itself on quality and reliability testing that exceeds industry standards and the Infinity 16 heat pump and Infinity 17 air conditioner with WeatherShield protection are no exception,” said Rob Lambert, Carrier product manager and application engineer. “We tested these units in a salt chamber, exposed them to salt fog and then allowed them to dry, which is representative of most seacoast applications*. Synthetic sea water** was forced through by running the unit’s fan to further duplicate realistic coastal conditions. Throughout this rigorous testing the ArmorPlate coated coils lasted longer than standard coils.”
In addition to the WeatherShield advantage, these units offer superior efficiency. The Infinity 16 two-stage heat pump with WeatherShield protection achieves a cooling efficiency of up to 16 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and a heating efficiency of up to 9.5 Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF). When paired with a compatible Carrier indoor unit, this heat pump runs on low stage 80 percent of the time to maintain consistent comfort.
Achieving up to 17 SEER, the Infinity 17 air conditioner with WeatherShield protection and its two-stage scroll compressor contribute to reduced energy use. This air conditioner, when matched with a compatible Carrier indoor unit, runs on low stage most of the time, providing homeowners with cool, consistent comfort.
